Housing Committee

I attended this morning's meeting of the Mobile County Housing Committee. We approved 8 hurricane-damaged houses for grant-funded rehabilitation or replacement. After the meeting, I talked with a representative from ADECA and the county administrator.

Public Safety Committee & Historic Society

I attended a meeting of the Council's Public Safety Committee, where we formally recommended that the full Council proceed with appointing Mike Reynolds as public safety chief on a permanent basis. Mr. Reynolds reported on recent activities of his department. We also discussed approving the acceptance of a plot of land donated from the Housing Authority for the construction of a grant-funded fire station.

After the meeting, I ventured to the Civic Center for a meeting of the Historic Society, where we heard an interesting lecture from Chickasaw Library Board Chairman James Harrell.

Business Opening & Kiwanis

I attended this morning's ribbon-cutting ceremony for Mama Lewis' Diner in Chickasaw. I look forward to many years of good food from Ms. Lewis.

This afternoon at Kiwanis, we heard from the city's contract grant writer, who briefly discussed the small grant that Chickasaw recently received from the Center for Healthy Communities at the University of South Alabama.

Click here to read today's article in the Press-Register about recent activities in Chickasaw.

Misc.

Today after church, I took a quick ride around Chickasaw and picked up an old yard sale sign. I also talked with a ballpark official. We are now heading into recreational football season at the park.

Mama Lewis'

I joined another Council member, the mayor, the Chamber president, a Commercial Development Board member and the code inspector for an on-the-house lunch at Mama Lewis' Restaurant; which is set to open tomorrow. I enjoyed the lunch tremendously. I think everyone will love this new addition to our business community.

While there, we discussed implementation of the Viaduct Road widening project and some upcoming changes to our zoning ordinances. When I returned from lunch, I corresponded with our contract grant writer and with the executive director of the Chickasaw Housing Authority.
